PACKARD-LE PERE LUSAC-11

The Packard-Le Pere LUSAC-11 was designed for the Engineering Division by Captain Le Pere of the French Aviation mission to the U.S. and built by the Packard Motor Car Co. The LUSAC-11 showed heavy French and Italian design influence, with the 400-h.p. Liberty engine carried in a plywood fuselage. Out of 25 production models and two prototypes built, two LUSAC-11s reached France. The LUSAC-21 (40024) was the same airframe with a 16-cylinder 420-h.p. Bugatti engine and the LUSAC-25 (40025) was another variant.
   LUSAC-11: Span, 39 ft. 0 1/4 in.; length, 25 ft. 4 5/8 in.; wing area, 415-6 sq. ft.; gross weight, 3,655 lb.; high speed, 136 m.p.h.

THE LE PERE FIGHTER.

Captain G. Lepere, an aeronautical engineer in the French Air service, designed the Lepere "Fighter" with a Liberty engine for production in the United States. It was intended for use as a fighter or reconnaissance machine, and carried two fixed guns firing forward, synchronised with the engine, and two Lewis guns attached to a movable Scarf ring surrounding the rear cockpit.

PACKARD LUSAC-11 USA

Designed at the behest of the US Army Engineering Division by Georges Lepere, a member of the French Aeronautical Mission to the USA, the LUSAC (an acronym for Lepere US Army Combat) was a two-seat two-bay staggered biplane of wooden construction powered by a 425 hp Liberty 12 water-cooled engine. Intended armament comprised two fixed forward-firing 0.3-in (7,62-mm) guns with a third on a flexible mounting in the rear cockpit. Flown for the first time in August 1918, the Lepere two-seat fighter was placed in production as the LUSAC-11 by the Packard Motor Company, but although large-scale manufacture was envisaged, only 30 had been completed when contracts were terminated with the end of World War I. The LUSAC-11 never entered service with the Air Service, but established several world altitude records in the early 'twenties.
